A more organized home doesn’t happen overnight—and it doesn’t require spending an entire weekend cleaning. This 28-day reset breaks the process into small, manageable challenges that can each be completed in about 20 minutes or less.

Complete one task each day. Don’t overthink it, don’t try to organize the entire house at once, and don’t worry about perfection. Small improvements add up quickly.

Day 1: The Junk Drawer Reset

Today’s task: Empty and organize one junk drawer.

Take everything out and sort it into categories. Throw away trash, relocate anything that belongs somewhere else, and keep only the useful items that comfortably fit inside the drawer. Remember the Container Rule: the drawer determines how much you can keep.

Day 2: Purge Your Wallet

Today’s task: Remove everything from your wallet and decide what deserves to go back.

Discard old receipts, expired coupons and outdated cards. Check your gift cards, insurance cards and loyalty cards. Your wallet should contain only the things you regularly need and use.

Day 3: The Medicine Cabinet

Today’s task: Clear expired and unnecessary products from your medicine cabinet.

Remove expired medicine, old makeup, forgotten travel samples and duplicate products. Follow the disposal instructions for medications rather than flushing them unless the label specifically directs you to do so. Wipe the shelves before returning the items you’re keeping.

Day 4: Kitchen Utensils

Today’s task: Sort through your kitchen utensils and eliminate unnecessary duplicates.

How many spatulas, wooden spoons, peelers and whisks do you really use? Keep your favorites and remove broken, uncomfortable or rarely used utensils. Store similar tools together so they’re easier to find.

Day 5: Coffee Mugs

Today’s task: Reduce your coffee-mug collection.

Keep the mugs you genuinely enjoy using. Donate duplicates, chipped mugs and the “guilt mugs” you’ve kept only because they were gifts. Your cabinet should comfortably hold your favorites without stacking them precariously.

Day 6: Plastic Food Containers

Today’s task: Match every food-storage container with its proper lid.

Remove lids without containers and containers without lids. Discard badly stained, cracked or warped pieces. Nest the containers together and store their matching lids upright whenever possible.

Day 7: The Refrigerator Reset

Today’s task: Clean and reorganize your refrigerator.

Throw away expired food, questionable leftovers and anything your household will not eat. Wipe the shelves and organize the remaining food into zones, such as beverages, produce, leftovers, condiments and meal ingredients.

Day 8: The Pantry Challenge

Today’s task: Organize one pantry or food-storage area.

Check expiration dates and remove stale or unwanted food. Group similar items together, such as canned goods, baking supplies, breakfast foods and snacks. Create an easy-to-reach snack zone so everyone knows where snacks belong.

Day 9: The Spice Cabinet

Today’s task: Sort and organize your spices.

Discard empty containers and spices that are extremely old or have lost their scent and flavor. Combine duplicates when appropriate, wipe the shelves and arrange the remaining spices alphabetically or by category.

Day 10: Under the Kitchen Sink

Today’s task: Clean and organize the cabinet beneath your kitchen sink.

Remove everything and check for leaks or moisture damage. Combine duplicate cleaning products, discard empty containers and neatly arrange your supplies. Keep frequently used products and trash bags within easy reach.

Day 11: The Bedroom Nightstand

Today’s task: Clear and organize your nightstand.

Remove dishes, trash, old receipts and anything that doesn’t support your bedtime or morning routine. Every item stored there should have a specific purpose. Leave the top as clear and peaceful as possible.

Day 12: The Sock Drawer

Today’s task: Match and organize your socks.

Remove worn-out socks and anything that no longer fits comfortably. Match every remaining sock with its partner. If a missing partner hasn’t appeared after a reasonable amount of time, let the single sock go.

Day 13: The Closet Floor

Today’s task: Reclaim the floor of one closet.

Remove everything from the floor and decide whether it truly belongs there. Put shoes together, relocate unrelated items and donate anything you no longer need. Your closet floor should not function as a forgotten storage unit.

Day 14: T-Shirts

Today’s task: Reduce and organize your T-shirt collection.

Remove shirts that don’t fit, are badly stained or haven’t been worn in a long time. Keep the ones you actually reach for. Fold or hang them consistently so you can see what you own.

Day 15: Shoes

Today’s task: Sort through your shoes.

Keep the shoes that fit, feel comfortable and work with your current life. Donate the “fantasy shoes” you keep imagining you’ll wear someday but never do. Pair the remaining shoes and give each pair a designated place.

Day 16: Bathroom Drawers

Today’s task: Organize one or more bathroom drawers.

Remove old hair products, dried-out cosmetics, travel products and samples you’re unlikely to use. Group similar products together and keep frequently used items in the most accessible locations.

Day 17: The Laundry Room

Today’s task: Reset your laundry area.

Remove empty bottles, outdated stain removers and products you don’t use. Combine compatible half-empty containers when the labels and products are identical. Deal with the collection of lost socks and clear unnecessary items from your work surfaces.

Day 18: Paper Clutter

Today’s task: Process one pile of paper.

Sort your mail, coupons, manuals and miscellaneous papers. Create four categories: take action, file, recycle and shred. Don’t simply move the pile to another location—make a decision about every piece.

Day 19: Office Supplies

Today’s task: Sort your pens, notepads and basic office supplies.

Test every pen and marker, then discard the ones that no longer work. Keep a reasonable number of notepads and remove broken or unnecessary supplies. Store similar items together so you can find them when needed.

Day 20: Charging Cords

Today’s task: Identify and organize your charging cords.

Gather your mystery cables, outdated phone chargers and duplicates. Identify what each cord belongs to and label the ones you’re keeping. Recycle obsolete electronics and cables through an appropriate electronics-recycling program.

Day 21: Digital Photos

Today’s task: Delete at least 500 unnecessary photos.

Digital clutter still counts as clutter. Remove blurry pictures, accidental screenshots, duplicate images and photos you no longer need. Don’t try to organize your entire photo library today—just concentrate on reducing it.

Day 22: Apps on Your Phone

Today’s task: Delete apps you no longer use.

Review every screen and remove outdated games, forgotten subscriptions and apps you haven’t opened in months. Place the apps you use most frequently where they are easiest to find.

Day 23: Your Email Inbox

Today’s task: Unsubscribe from at least 20 unnecessary email lists.

Search your inbox for newsletters, advertisements and promotional emails you routinely delete without reading. Unsubscribe from them instead of allowing them to continue piling up. Delete what you no longer need and flag anything requiring action.

Day 24: One Garage Shelf

Today’s task: Organize one shelf in your garage or storage area.

Do not attempt to clean the entire garage. Choose one shelf, remove everything and sort it into keep, relocate, donate and discard categories. Clean the shelf and return only the items that belong there.

Day 25: Holiday Decorations

Today’s task: Review one container or category of holiday decorations.

Keep the decorations you love and realistically use. Remove anything broken, badly worn or no longer meaningful to you. Label the container clearly before putting it away.

Day 26: Sentimental Items

Today’s task: Carefully reduce one small category of sentimental belongings.

Choose a manageable category rather than opening every memory box you own. Keep the items that carry the strongest meaning. Remember: you can preserve the memory without keeping every object associated with it. Photographing an item may make it easier to release.

Day 27: The Donation Dash

Today’s task: Fill one box or bag with donations.

Walk through your home and collect usable things you no longer need. Don’t overthink every decision. Once the container is full, place it in your vehicle and make a plan to deliver it promptly so it doesn’t become permanent clutter.

Day 28: The Whole-House Victory Tour

Today’s task: Walk through your home and celebrate what you accomplished.

Review the spaces you organized and compare them with any “before” photographs you took. Notice how much easier it is to find things and use your home. Remove any remaining donation boxes, finish one loose end and choose a few habits you want to maintain.

You completed 28 small challenges—and proved that organization doesn’t have to be overwhelming. The goal was never perfection. The goal was to make your home easier to use, easier to maintain and more peaceful to live in.

DAN’S BLOG

When I was four my parents had a home addition built. Until construction was complete, my mom said I made it my mission to keep everything as organized as possible. I just could not handle the mess, chaos, and clutter.

Throughout my childhood, my clothes hung neatly in the closet organized by type and color.  I would lose myself for hours organizing the basement, attic, garage, and anywhere that needed it.   I was always rewarded with praise. Who wouldn't love a kid who likes to clean and organize? Organizing has always been my passion. I am a natural-born organizer.

Hello, I’m Dan The Organizer Man !

My professional organizing experience is extensive, and in 30 plus years has varied from corporate settings, estates, homes, offices, hoarding situations, and events.   As a Certified Professional Coach, I bring my unique coaching style to the field of organization with a wacky sense of humor and a burning desire to address not just the clutter, but the underlying cause and its long-term resolution.
